Tres Latin Foods is turning a Salvadoran stuffed masa cake into a wide-selling frozen-food line. The company began testing its pupusa product with Whole Foods Market, then signed a distribution deal that led to a wider retail base. The line is now available in about 400 stores and the company plans to double that in the next year. The pupusas come in three flavors: spinach and cheese, pinto bean and cheese, and vegan black bean and sweet corn, the company's best seller. Tres Latin Foods is preparing to launch four new varieties next March: two meat-filled pupusas and two breakfast pupusas.

The company's expansion is well-timed, as natural and organic frozen food sales are projected to reach $1.83 billion this year, a 15.5 percent increase from 2013, according to Nutrition Business Journal. The overall frozen food category, however, is expected to see sales decrease 2.6 percent from 2013 to $8.62 billion, reports Boulder Daily CameraFull Story
